The exercise guidelines between the US and Europe differ considerably. The European Society of Cardiology recommends engaging in at least 150-300 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, which translates to about 45 minutes daily at the higher end. In contrast, the American Heart Association suggests a much lower range of 75-150 minutes of moderate physical activity. This is particularly concerning in a society that averages nearly 10 hours of sitting each day which is slowly eroding the cardiovascular system, leading to the phrase, “sitting is the new smoking.” When it comes to high-intensity training, the ESC suggests a duration of at least 75 to 150 minutes, whereas the AHA recommends at least 75 minutes.
